The Cincinnati Soup Company has been a concept I have been thinking about for almost a decade. I’ve put it off for multiple reasons. All of them very good. But, they were just excuses. Why do we put off anything we want to do? We’re scared, lazy, tired, confused, lost, or etc… There is no valid reason to put off anything in this mortal coil. We are all gonna die. Might as well die having done something you respected. So, I have to do it or I’ll never respect myself again.
I’m a reluctant lover of Cincinnati. Cincinnati Public Schools, and 19 formative years in Northside, taught me that it is important to temper love or you might get burned. It is the only city I love though, outside of Paris, but I’ll discuss that later.
I want to make a place that helps to bridge the gaps between the different groups in the city. The east-sider meets and west-sider. The suburbanite meets urbanite. The black meets white. The transplant meets 5th generation west sider. The local politician meets CPS student. A place that everyone feels comfortable.
I want to create a place that builds civic pride through it’s action. I want to clean up trash. I want to cut down honeysuckle in the parks. I want to have a Thanksgiving celebration for those that don’t have one.
When I was young I used to think that “If I could just help the world by filling sand bags or digging ditches, I would.” Sadly, that never came to fruition. But, perhaps the Cincinnati Soup Company can allow me to fill trash bags and dig up invasive species to make my hometown better.
